Friday Morning 12:01 A.M.
So what were you doing at 12:01 am Friday morning? Were you sleeping or did you go to the movies like me to watch "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor"?
I have enjoyed the first two "Mummy" movies and was really looking forward to the next instalment (and well to see Brendan Fraser all hot and sweaty too).
Well... the movie does live up to it's name. There is a Mummy, a tomb, a dragon and an emperor, but it was missing a complete story, acting and Rachel Weisz, who portrayed Evie in the first two Mummy movies.
The "Evie" replacement was just a creepy, older, less friendly version of the original.
One of the things I loved in the first two instalments of this tale is the camaraderie between Evie and Rick (Brendan). However... there was no special connection with this pairing. Every encounter with them seemed stiff (and not in the good way) and cold. I think I would have preferred the "Evie" character to have just disappeared from the story line.
And Evie looked too old compared to Rick (Brendan).
And Alex, their little son is now college age... and looks almost as old as his Dad, Rick.
There was just too much happening to be a cohesive story. And come on... 2,000 undead soldiers vs. 2,000 undead soldiers... is just too much computer animation and who really cares anyway.
Now the emperor was portrayed by Jet Li... and gosh.. I love Jet Li movies. But dang... in most of the scenes he was a stone man with blazing eyes... or a human with black gooey stuff running out of his orifices. Rarely was he seen like this:
And don't even get me started on the "Yetis" that were helpful to Rick and his friends.
There was even an ancient love story that could have been played out in more detail, an immortal witch who watched her lover being torn apart by 4 horses because the emporer desired her for his own. And for 2,000 years she guarded that emperor's tomb to ensure no one uncovered it. And what happens???? She gives up her immortality to raise up the 2,000 undead soldiers and the damn emporer slices and dices her... and she dies. ???? Couldn't in her dying scene, Ming, her undead lover be reunited with her??? Is that too much to ask???? I mean... she stood by waiting for 2,000 fucking years. Just one glimpse????? Was that too much to ask? Or for Ming to see his daughter that he never knew he had??????
I left the movie feeling sort of unsatisfied. Sure... there were some good scenes with Brendan:
But... overall the movie was just bad. And having spent $33.75 to get in to see the movie and $25.75 at the refreshment counter.... I just wanted to enjoy the flick.
