Blindness
Alex and I watched "Blindness" this weekend. It was a strange and dark movie. People are falling victim to a plague of blindness sweeping through the population. Very few are spared. The first are quarantined in an abandoned mental hospital where civility evaporates and order quickly breaks down. Kept at bay by armed guards, fear dominates and the strong reign.
Being quarantined is disgusting and gross. There are rape scenes, murders, dead bodies, excrement strewn hallways, and lots of naked people. The guards do not give enough food to all the inhabitants... and civility disappears.
Eventually, the sighted woman (Julianne Moore) leads a tiny group from quarantine into the streets of a ravished city where civilization has ceased to exist. She returns the group to her home... and a family life begins.
There is a surprise ending....
The entire time I watched this movie... especially the scenes from being quarantined so reminded me of those people housed in the Astrodome during Hurricane Katrina and how quickly a civilization falls in the face of fear and deprivation.
If you have seen this movie, let me know what you think. It was one of those movies that really makes you think.
