Playing Chicken
Last night on the way home from the hospital in Greenville, I decided to come through Brookville, then down Wolf Creek Pike to the new 35 connector. It's a more direct route to my home but as you know Wolf Creek is pretty curvy and dark at night and there are deer that like to jump across the roadway.
That route takes you through a small section of Trotwood. When you enter Trotwood the speed limit drops to 25 mph. I was going 25, but there was an impatient person riding my tail. I came to the traffic light where Wolf Creek veers to the right. I turned and the guy in the car behind me follows. This section of road is 35 mph. As I began to increase my speed, the guy zooms past me, and passes me at the curve in the road. I was just about to remark on his stupidity when I saw a bunch of kids walking on the right side of the road. The guy had almost hit them when he passed me. Then the guy passed another car. At double yellow lines. This guy was moving fast.
The car that was now in front of me slammed on his brakes and I see a girl falling forward into the ditch on the right. I flipped on my brights and there were a group of teenagers standing on the left in the cornfield, just laughing and hopping around.
I guess they were playing chicken and running in front of cars. Can you believe that crap? I called 911 and gave them the location.
I take this route every time I visit my parents. Normally I'm alone in the car. If you would hit one of these kids, would the rest of the kids jump out and rob you, take your car, etc? I mean what are you thinking about when you stand out in a field at 10:30 at night on a Saturday and running in front of cars?
Gary did see some beer cans in a couple of the boys hands. I guess it was a big joke to the group in the field. I, on the other hand, was worried about the unsuspecting person who would be driving on that road and not see them in time. Can you even imagine what it would be like to strike a person and the last effects that would have on you?
I do hope the police arrived in time and directed the kids home. And if they were underage and drinking that the parents would be notified and hopefully talk some sense into their kids.
